Markdown preview, rendered as you type
Markdown Preview renders what you paste as a formatted document, updating as you type. Developers use it to check a README before a commit, confirm GitHub-flavored tables and task lists render as expected, and review a draft before publishing. The marked parser turns headings, lists, code fences, blockquotes and tables into HTML, which is cleaned before it is shown: scripts, styles, frames and event handlers are removed, remote images appear as a text placeholder instead of being loaded, and links keep only http, https and mailto addresses.
How to use Markdown Preview
- Open Markdown Preview in the Toolbox101 app.
- Paste or type Markdown into the
Markdownbox. The document re-renders as you type. - Read the rendered result in the
Outputbox: headings, lists, tables, task lists, code blocks and blockquotes appear styled, not as source text. - Click
Copywhen you need the rendered content as plain text; the visible text is copied.
Worked example
Markdown Preview returns the output below for this input.
Input
# Setup guide
Install the CLI, then **verify** it:
1. Run `toolbox check`
2. Read the report
> Tip: keep tokens local. What you see
A heading "Setup guide"; a paragraph with "verify" in bold; a numbered list of two items, the first with `toolbox check` as inline code; and a blockquote "Tip: keep tokens local."Check it yourself: open Markdown Preview and enter the same input.
Frequently asked questions
Which Markdown features does it support?
The preview parses with GitHub-Flavored Markdown enabled: pipe tables, task lists, strikethrough, autolinks and fenced code blocks render, alongside standard CommonMark constructs like headings, lists, blockquotes and emphasis. No configuration is needed before you paste; the parser runs with its defaults.
Can I paste raw HTML into my markdown?
Yes, but it is cleaned before it is shown. Common tags such as div, span, table and details render, while script, style, iframe, forms, SVG and inline event handlers are dropped, so nothing in the input can run code or make a request. Images appear as [image: alt text] placeholders, and a link whose address is not http, https, mailto or an anchor loses its link.
Will the preview match GitHub's rendering?
Standard GFM constructs such as tables, task lists and strikethrough render the way GitHub shows them, because both start from the same syntax. GitHub adds its own extensions and CSS, so site-specific features such as emoji shortcodes do not appear here, and layout differences are expected. This preview is also stricter than GitHub about what raw HTML it keeps.
How is this different from Markdown to HTML?
Markdown to HTML writes the generated h1, p and li markup into the Output box as text you can copy into a file. Markdown Preview renders that same result visually, as a document, and its Copy button returns the visible text with the tags stripped. Use the converter when you need markup; use the preview to check how it looks.
