Generators

Fake data generator

The fake data generator writes made-up people for test data: name, email, username, phone number, postal address, company, job title, date of birth and an IP address. QA engineers and developers use it to fill forms, seed demo accounts and write fixtures. Emails use the reserved example.com, example.org and example.net domains, phone numbers use the 555-01xx range set aside for fiction, and IP addresses come from the ranges reserved for documentation, so nothing points at a real person or machine. Choose 1 to 50 "People", as plain text or JSON.

How to use Fake Data Gen

  1. Open Fake Data Gen in the Toolbox101 app; one record is already in the Output box.
  2. Set People for how many records you need (1 to 50) and Format to Text or JSON.
  3. Click Generate New to draw again.
  4. Click Copy, then paste the records into your test form, seed file or bug report.

Frequently asked questions

Are the generated records about real people?

No. Names, streets, cities and companies are combined at random from short lists, so a record can look plausible without describing anyone. Emails, phone numbers and IP addresses use ranges reserved for examples and fiction, so they cannot reach a real inbox, phone or server.

Why do the emails always end in example.com, example.org or example.net?

Those domains are reserved for documentation and testing, so mail sent to them is never delivered to a real inbox. Using them in generated records means test registrations and fixture data cannot accidentally email real people or leak into genuine mail logs.

Can I generate many records at once?

Yes, up to 50 per click with People. The lists are small, so a large batch repeats names and cities. That is fine for filling forms and fixtures but not for a statistically realistic dataset; for that, use a data-generation library with wider pools.

Which fields does a record contain?

Nine: Name, Email, Username, Phone, Address, Company, Job title, Date of birth and IP address. In JSON format each is a key on an object and the output is an array of those objects.
