SHA-512 hash generator

SHA-512 hash generator computes the 128-character SHA-512 digest of text you paste, entirely in your browser. Teams verifying release artifacts that publish SHA-512 sums use it to confirm integrity without installing anything, and its 512-bit output is the longest standard SHA-2 variant. Results are lowercase hex, always 128 characters, matching sha512sum. The "Iterations" field re-hashes the previous digest when raised above 1.

How to use SHA-512

  1. Open SHA-512 in the Toolbox101 app.
  2. Paste the text or checksum source into the Input box.
  3. Leave Iterations at 1 for a single hash; a higher number hashes the previous digest again that many times.
  4. The 128-character digest shows in the Output box as you type.
  5. Click Copy and compare the digest against the published SHA-512 sum.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a SHA-512 hash always 128 characters?

SHA-512 digests are 512 bits, or 64 bytes, and each byte is rendered as two hex characters, so every result is exactly 128 lowercase-hex characters regardless of input length, and the length never reveals the message size. For reference, the digest of an empty string is cf83e1357eefb8bdf1542850d66d8007d620e4050b5715dc83f4a921d36ce9ce47d0d13c5d85f2b0ff8318d2877eec2f63b931bd47417a81a538327af927da3e.

Is SHA-512 better than SHA-256 for hashing?

Both are collision-resistant SHA-2 members; SHA-512's longer output does not double the security, since collision resistance tops out at 256 bits for SHA-512 and 128 bits for SHA-256, both beyond any practical attack. SHA-512 can even outrun SHA-256 on 64-bit CPUs because it processes 64-bit words. Choose by what your ecosystem expects.

Can I verify a file checksum with SHA-512?

Yes. This tool hashes pasted text, so paste the exact content when it is textual. For binaries, run sha512sum on the file locally and compare the hex with what the publisher lists. Both paths produce the same 128-character digest format, and hex comparison is case-insensitive.

SHA-512 or SHA3-512: what is the difference?

SHA-512 is the older SHA-2 construction from 2001; SHA3-512 is the Keccak-sponge design that won the SHA-3 competition in 2012. Despite the shared 512-bit output size, they are unrelated algorithms that never match for the same input. Both render as 128 hex characters, so keep the algorithm name when you compare checksums.
